Infrastructure Projects in Cyprus

 

 

 

 

 

1-IΝFRASTRUCTURE WORKS PLANNED BY DEPARTEMENTS OF THE MINISTRY

   OF AGRICULTURE, NATURAL RESOURCES AND ENVIRONMENT

 

1.Works planned by the Water Development Department for the next few years

 

(a)    Water supply works

 

-         In the Limassol area : Extension of the treatment plant from 40.000 m³/day to 60.000 m³/day. Connection of the Eastern part of the city with the treatment works. Connection of Yermasoyia dam with the Southern Conveyor Projects Estimated cost €12m.

-         Kannaviou Treatment plant for the Paphos district Higher villages, capacity 4000 m³/day.

-         Installation of a conveyor dia 600 mm. length 27 km, from Kannaviou Dam to Asprokremmos treatment plant. Tenders for this

 

(b)   Irrigation Works

 

-         Solea dam and irrigation, a project of about €25m. Tenders for design of the dam will be called soon.

-         Orounda pond, capacity 600.000 m³, and associated irrigation network.

 

(c)    Ssewage Treatment and Recycled Water Reuse

-         Treatment of Nicosia effluent by reverse osmosis (about 40.000 m³/day) and transfer of the water to the southern conveyor (25km long, 600 mm dia connection conveyor).

-         Sewage treatment works and reuse for a large number of communities of population over 2000. Construction tenders will be called soon for the 10 communities of Kokkinochoria area.

 

(d)   Major Works in Progress

-         Kannaviou dam in the Paphos area, capacity 18 m³m for irrigation and water supply.

-         Akaki-Malounda dam capacity 2mm³ for irrigation.

 

 

  1. Works Planned by the Fisheries Department

 

(a)    Construction of landing facilities and auction center. The auction center will include installation for the trade of fisheries products as well as a port for the fishing vessels. There will be invitation of tenders for its instruction.

(b)   Construction of a fishing shelter at Zygi. The construction plans have been completed. Upon receipt of the approvals required by the different Departments, there will be invitation of tenders for the construction of the fishing shelter.

 

(c)    A study is being carried out for the improvement of the Potamos Liopertriou fishing shelter and the area surrounding the shelter. Regarding this project an open architectural European wide competition will be launched, where in the first phase, interested companies will be invited to submit their proposal-ideas. In the second phase the best 5-6 proposal-ideas will be selected and will proceed to closed architectural competition in order to select the best and final proposition.

 

 

  1. Works Planned by Cyprus Payments Organization (CAPO)

 

(a)    Construction of the Building for CAPO’s Head Quarters in Nicosia. The project will cost about £3.000.000 and will begin during 2005.

 

(b)   Provision of the following software

-         Software for stock control

-         Software for Human Resource Management

-         Software Document Management

 

The software for Document Management will be bought in 2005 and the other two during 2006. The total cost will be about £250.000.

 

(c)    Installation of GIS for Olive orcharts : The project will cost about £430.000 and will begin during 2005.

 

(d)   Construction of Buildings for CAPO’s District Offices.

 

(e)    Installation of New ELPIS based on block systems: The project will cost about £500.000 and will be developed by CAPO. It will begin during 2005 and will be completed during 2006.

 

 

  1. Works Planned by Veterinary Services

 

Establishment of  two plants for the control of animal by - promoducts not intended for human consumption.

 

The first plan refers to the collection from the farms and the abattoirs of category 1 and 2 materials and their secure transport and destruction either by incineration or by rendering and co-incineration.

 

The second plant refers to the collection of category 3 materials and their processing in a rendering plant of destruction by incineration.

 

Both plants are at their final stage of procedure.

 

2. Ministry of Justice and Public Order

 

  1. Department of Prisons
  1. Psychiatric Centre within the area of the prisons (in stage of study)
  2. Visiting room for women prisoners (in stage of study)
  3. Small chapel inside the women’s wing (the construction starts shortly)

 

  1. Courts
  1. New building for the District Court of Nicosia (in stage of preparation of the terms of an architectural invitation to tender).
  2. Underground parking place for the District Court of Limassol (a contract has already been signed with an architect for the preparation of plans)

 

  1. State Archives
  1. New building (the final plans and studies for the launching of the invitation to tender are under preparation)

 

  1. Police and Fire Department
  1. New police and Fire-fighting station at Polis Chrysochous (the study has already been started)
  2. Police Station at Kouklia (an invitation to tender is expected to be launched around September 2005)
  3. New Police division of Morphou at Evrychou (the completion of the plans is expected in May 2005)
  4. Second phase of the Fire Department Headquarters (an invitation to tender is imminent)
  5. Shelter for the Police Air force Wing (the works start in January 2005)
  6. New weapon stores at the Police Headquarters (an invitation to tender is already launched)
  7. Police Station at Nisou (the works are expected to start in March 2005)
  8. Police Station at Lania (les studies will be completed during July 2005)

4.HIGHER HOTEL INSTITUTE, CYPRUS

 

 

Subjet : Refurbishing of the “PHILOXENIA” Hotel, Cyprus

 

 

On the basis of a decision by the Council of Ministers the Higher Hotel Institute, Cyprus is going to undertake the refurbishment of the PHILOXENIA hotel, so that it can be used by the Institute, on a regular basis, for training purposes.

 

PHILOXENIA is a small hotel featuring 32 twin rooms, which is located back-to-back to the Institute’s main building. The hotel features two restaurants, a bar, banquet facilities, a lobby area, a 200 seat auditorium with simultaneous interpretation and automated voting facilities, a swimming pool and a gym room. In addition, the Hotel features six “cabana type” family rooms by the swimming pool. The hotel is currently non-operational and full refurbishment is scheduled to commence in the upcoming years. Upon refurbishment, the building will house a new and more spacious library, a state of the art demonstration kitchen, a new upgraded and much larger training restaurant/bar, an executive training center to be equipped with all necessary facilities for seminars, training and debates, fully furnished accommodation facilities for 64 students and a student’s breakfast room.

The infrastructure projects concern mainly the acquisition of sites, as well as the erection and design of gymnasiums, lyceums, primary schools, technical and vocational schools, canteens, music rooms, laboratories, workshops for computers and cooking, play fields, rooms of physical education, music classrooms, libraries and medical centres, in Nicosia, Limassol, Paphos and Larnaca.

 

It also concerns the ant earthquake maintenance, field tracks, installation of central heating systems, updating of electrical installation, storage, extensions of existing rooms etc.
